Asian Court Song: Korea, Japan, and China

 

I. Objectives

A. Identify the characteristics of Asian court music traditions from Korea,Japan, and China through listening.

B.  Describe the purpose of court music in rituals, ceremonies, and cultural traditions.

C.  Analyze and compare selected court music performances based on instrumentation, tempo, mood, and structure.

III.  Learner’s Activities

In this lesson, we will explore the unique court music traditions of Korea, Japan, and China. Before modern entertainment, emperors, kings, and nobles listened to court music elegant, ceremonial music performed during rituals, celebrations, and official gatherings.

 

 

Preparatory Activity

The class begins with a short listening activity. Click the links below and listen carefully:

While listening, observe the following:

1.      What instruments can you hear?

2.      How does each country’s court music make you feel?

        Korea (Hyangak):

Ritual Confucian music using bells, stone chimes, and flutes.

        Japan (Gagaku):

The world’s oldest surviving court music, featuring winds like sho and hichiriki.

        China (Peking Opera):

Ancient ritual music used in ancestral temples and imperial ceremonies.

 

Activity 1: Group Listening and Analysis

In small groups, learners listen again to short clips and analyze:

1.      Instruments used

2.      Tempo and rhythm

3.      Purpose (ritual? dance? ceremony?)

4.      Mood (solemn, majestic, calm, sacred)

Then present each group:

1.      Their chosen country’s example

2.      Their analysis

3.      Why they believe it represents court music
