 I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  1. Identify the major folk music traditions of selected Asian countries (Philippines, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, India).

  2. Describe the cultural significance and characteristics of Asian folk music.

  3. Perform a simple folk rhythm, chant, or visual element inspired by an Asian tradition.

Philippine Folk Song 

Kulintang- In the Philippines, a type of love song known as the Kundiman had existed since the early 19th century. But in the early 20th century Kundiman had developed into art song.

Chinese Folk Song 

Ehru - The Erhu, one of China’s most iconic traditional instruments, is a two-stringed bowed instrument with over a millennium of history.

Japanese Folk Song 

 Minyo - (Japanese folk songs) represent the musical traditions and cultural expressions that have been passed down through generations in Japan.

Korean Folk Song 

Arirang - is a popular form of Korean folk song and the outcome of collective contributions made by ordinary Koreans throughout generations.

Indonesian Folk Song 

Gamelan - refers to the traditional Indonesian percussion orchestra and to the set of musical instruments used.

India Folk Song 

Rajasthani - folk songs pertain to their tunes, rhythms, and lyrics. For a rule, the songs are accompanied by classical musical instruments, such as the dholak, ektara, sarangi, and morchang.

Each group will:

  1. Listen/watch assigned folk music/video.

  2. Identify characteristics (instruments, rhythm, theme).

  3. Analyze cultural meaning.

  4. Present in a 2-minute sharing.

- Perform a simple rhythmic pattern from any Asian folk music (clap, hum, chant).

- Make a mini folk-art inspired output (small paper cut-out, simple batik pattern, easy origami).
