Quarter 1 – Module 2: Music of Lowlands of Luzon Folk Songs and the Rondalla


I. Objectives

At the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify the different instruments used in the rondalla ensemble.

  2. Compare and describe the live and instrumental versions of selected Philippine folk songs.

  3. Demonstrate appreciation of the cultural and musical importance of the rondalla in Filipino tradition.

III. Learner’s Activities

1. Preparatory Activity

Before we begin our lesson, let’s answer first the activity  Pre-Assessment Activity.

This short task will help you recall what you already know about folk songs and rondalla music. After that, we’ll learn about the instruments of the rondalla, Banduria, Laud, Octavina, Guitar, and Bajo de Uñas   and how they create the lively sound of Filipino music.


2.Listening activity 

Try singing these songs by yourself. Then listen to the music samples of the same folk songs provided by your teacher. Compare the 'live version' to the instrumental version. Write the similarities and differences in the Google Form.

What is Rondolla?

Now that we already know what a rondalla is, let’s get to know its instruments.

The main instruments of the Rondalla are:

 the Banduria – plays the melody and has 14 strings. 

 Laud – provides harmony and has a longer neck than the banduria.

Octavina – gives a deeper tone and supports the melody.

 Guitar – maintains rhythm and harmony.

Bajo de Uñas (Bass guitar) – provides the lowest sound and foundation of the music.

 that together create the unique and lively sound of Filipino music.


3. Activity: “Feel the Folk Rhythm”

No need for choreography — just move with the beat!

  • Choose one folk song from the list.

  • Tap your hands, sway, or step lightly to follow its rhythm.

  • Notice how your movements change when the tempo or mood of the music shifts.
