Musical Instruments and their Families By Princess Diane Fabay

 INTRODUCTORY LESSON

ARE YOU READY?

  1. Objectives:

  1. Identify the four main families of musical instruments: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion.

  2. Analyze how each family produces sound differently.

  3. Create a digital poster, short vlog, or blog post describing one instrument family and its examples.

  1. Topic: Musical Instruments and their Families

  1. Learner’s Activities:

Music has always been an essential part of human life. From traditional drums and flutes to modern orchestras and digital instruments, each sound we hear comes from a unique family of instruments. These families — strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion — work together to create the harmony and melody we enjoy in music.

  • Before you start, open Google Classroom and access our class using this code:

  • Watch the video on YouTube entitled: Instrument Families | Artsville

  • After viewing the entire video proceed to the Learning Activity: Sound Match Challenge posted in Google classroom.

  • Then proceed to the Creative Task: Build Your Own Ensemble.

  • After completing the task proceed to Reflection Paper No.1 (RP-1).

  • Finally, proceed to Reflection Paper No. 2 (RP-2): Music for the Future.

After viewing, proceed to the Learning Activity: Sound Match Challenge posted in Google Classroom. In this interactive quiz, you’ll listen to several short audio clips and identify which instrument family the sound belongs to. This activity will help sharpen your listening skills and strengthen your ability to distinguish between the timbres of different instruments.

Once you’ve completed the quiz, continue to the Creative Task: Build Your Own Ensemble. In this task, you will design your own small virtual music group using one instrument from each family. You may create a simple digital poster, collage, or short paragraph description that includes the name of your group, the instruments chosen, and a brief explanation of how each contributes to the overall sound of your ensemble. You may use Canva, PowerPoint, or Google Slides for this activity and upload your finished work in the same Google Classroom post.

After completing your creative task, you will write Reflection Paper No. 1 (RP-1) in Google Classroom. In your reflection, describe what you learned about the relationship between instrument families and how understanding these differences affects your appreciation of music. Discuss how modern technology, such as electronic instruments and digital music production, continues to expand the idea of instrument families in today’s music industry. Write your reflection in one to two paragraphs.

When you have finished your reflection, take some time to read the works of your classmates. Leave meaningful and courteous comments on at least three (3) of their submissions. You may share what you liked about their chosen instruments or how their ideas helped you view music in a new way. Always observe proper online etiquette and avoid using inappropriate language.

Finally, proceed to Reflection Paper No. 2 (RP-2): Music for the Future. In this second reflection, propose ways your school or community can promote music education and appreciation of instrument families among students. You may suggest ideas such as holding a virtual music showcase, organizing an “Instrument Discovery Day,” or integrating music appreciation sessions into other subject areas. Upload your RP-2 as a Google Doc or Blogspot post before the given deadline.

To conclude the lesson, return to this Smart Class or Blogspot post and share your final thoughts in the comment section. Write a short paragraph answering the question: “Which instrument family best represents your personality and why?” Then, reply to at least two of your co-SMART Learners’ comments to share insights and encourage one another.

Completing all parts of this activity — the Sound Match Challenge, Creative Ensemble, and both reflection papers — will qualify you for a digital certificate of completion signed by your teacher. Remember, each comment and submission reflects your creativity and respect for learning. Let’s make music together through understanding, expression, and harmony!🎶
