III. Learner’s Activities

These two (2) short video clips will show the culture of the Philippines and Malaysia.

PHILIPPINES

Hinilawod is an ancient Sugidanon (or Suguidanon) epic from the Sulod people of Central Panay Island, Philippines—particularly in the provinces of Iloilo and Capiz. The term "Sugidanon" (from the word sugid, meaning "to tell") refers to a folk epic or narrative chant that is sung or chanted and passed down orally through generations.

MALAYSIA

Wayang kulit, a traditional Malaysian shadow puppetry art form with a history spanning 500 years, is being revitalized through a unique fusion with the popular “Star Wars” franchise. This innovative project aims to transform wayang kulit from a fading cultural practice into a popular contemporary art by blending classic Malaysian storytelling with iconic elements from the global sci-fi saga.

The project is spearheaded by Tintoy Chuo, a shadow puppet designer and passionate “Star Wars” fan, who envisioned combining these two seemingly disparate worlds. Recognizing that the success of this fusion required expert puppetry skills, Tintoy collaborated with Muhammad Dain bin Othman (Pak Dain), a 13th-generation master puppeteer deeply rooted in traditional wayang kulit performance.
