Music 7 – Quarter 3
The Importance of Music
Music as an Expression of Life, Communication, and the Personal Self
Introduction
As we all know, when we talk about music, we are not just referring to the sound. Music is more than just a sound, it is a powerful and significant part of our culture and everyday life. It shows what we feel, expresses our emotions, and even shouts what we cannot say out loud.
In this module, you will discover:
how music reflects life and culture,
how it expresses our feelings and thoughts,
how it communicates messages and emotions,
how it expresses your unique personality and identity,
how it serves as a meaningful and powerful part of our human experience.
1. Music as an Expression of Life
One of the things I’ve always noticed about music is how it reflects real life, real stories, and real events. Every place and every culture has its own identities and own songs whether they’re happy, sad, or somewhere in between and these songs usually tell stories, memories, and experiences. Sometimes they talk about daily routines, traditions, celebrations, emotions, and even important events that shaped who they are.
If you think about familiar songs like Bahay Kubo, it’s simple, but it says a lot about Filipino culture and daily life. It talks about nature, simple living, and the things that Filipino people value. Even today, modern songs do the same thing. Artists write about love, relationships, friendships, problems, and victories. These things all of us understand because they’re part of our everyday life as Filipinos.
How Music Expresses Life:
It reflects culture (ex: folk songs show traditions of a community).
It expresses human emotions (ex: lullabies for comfort, upbeat songs for celebrations).
It shows historical events (ex: patriotic songs).
It shapes identity (songs unique to ethnic groups or regions).
Example:
"Leron Leron Sinta" tells stories about Filipino culture and daily life.

2. Music as a Tool for Communication
Music communicates messages even without saying a word and even without lyrics, music can communicate something. A melody, rhythm, or harmony can send a message that listeners can feel and understand.
But when lyrics are added, the message becomes even clearer. For example, patriotic songs can make us feel united. Love songs can express things that people sometimes find hard to say. Protest songs can show disagreement or call for change. Sometimes one song can speak for millions of people.
Communication doesn’t always have to be loud or direct. Even humming a tune when you’re sad or happy is already a form of expressing what you feel.
How Music Communicates:
Expresses emotions: happiness, anger, grief, calmness
Conveys messages: protest songs, national anthem
Builds connections: group singing, cultural rituals
Tells stories: narrative songs or ballads
Example:
The Philippine National Anthem communicates patriotism and unity.
Love songs communicate feelings of affection and longing.

3. Music as an Expression of the Personal Self
Music is a reflection of who we are. The songs we listen to or compose show our feelings, thoughts, personality, emotions, and experiences. Everyone has a favorite song and a playlist that reflects who they are. Some people like calm, relaxing music and some people like loud, lively music.
How Music Expresses the Self:
Shows personal emotions (we choose songs based on our mood)
Reveals interests and personality (genre preference: pop, rock, classical, K-pop, etc.)
Allows self-expression (writing songs, singing, or playing instruments)
Helps in stress relief and emotional release
Example:
If you listen to relaxing music when stressed, it reflects your emotional needs and personal coping style.
